The magician doing the trick takes what they're doing for granted, every-day stuff; everyone else sees magic.
(And no, I'm not implying your strengths are an illusion; just trying to say that what we take for granted and 'ordinary' about ourselves can be very underrated from our own p.o.v.)
I'd say that first panel proves you are way underestimating your potential. And, just look at what you've done in the past year with the webcomic! I am sooo jealous!!! I wish I could be you.
Aw, don't feel so down. I wish I was as nearly as productive as you are. My comics suck cause I can't get around to updating... I guess I should be doing that now. Anyways, your comics are great and your productivity amazes me.
For future reference, it looks like I'm going to have to use specific detail to describe how awesome you are and why you deserve such praise. That way you'll know for sure! Hard facts!
It's all about balance, I guess. When self-confidence becomes arrogance, artistic output can suffer. A little bit of doubt can push some people to try harder, while too much keeps them from trying at all. You need enough self-confidence to not only keep trying, and putting your material out there, and shopping your stuff around (that must be why 'agents' come into play?), but you also need enough to 'feel comfortable.'
Maybe the lesson is to use your own self-doubt as a tool, and be in complete control of it. As long as you don't let it control you, it's probably 'natural' to feel some level of doubt, and in controlling it, you can even turn it into an asset (in this sense, Black Heart is probably more useful than most people give her credit for!). When self-confidence starts to ebb, that's when you should rely on your friends and fans to put it back up to optimal levels.
That being said, I'm *no* kind of authority when it comes to self-confidence (I swing between low self confidence and extreme arrogance, with seemingly no level ground) so take anything I say with an extreme grain of salt...pick out anything you find useful, and discard the rest. And just keep doing what you're doing! :)

ReplyDeleteAwww, thanks everyone! I think a lot of people must oversee their own value. I just wish it wasn't so hard. Life would be so much easier, no?
